What meta tags do and why they matter

Meta tags are short pieces of HTML placed in the <head> of a page. They describe the page to search engines, browsers and social networks. The two that matter most for search are the title tag and the meta description, because together they form the snippet people see in Google results. A clear, specific snippet usually earns more clicks than a vague one.

How to write a good title tag

    • Aim for about 50–60 characters. Google cuts titles off by pixel width (around 600 pixels on desktop), so the counter above shows both characters and pixels.
    • Put the main topic near the beginning and your brand name at the end.
    • Give every page its own title. Repeating the same title across many pages makes them harder to tell apart.
    • Write for people first. A natural phrase beats a list of keywords.

How to write a good meta description

Keep it to roughly 120–160 characters, describe what the visitor will find, and use plain, active language. A meta description is not a direct ranking factor, but it can influence whether someone clicks your result. Google sometimes replaces it with text from the page that better matches the search, so make sure the page itself also covers the topic well.

    What the other tags do

    • Canonical URL: tells search engines which address is the main version of a page when the same content can be reached through several URLs, for example with tracking parameters or with and without www.
    • Robots: controls whether a page may appear in search results. Use noindex for pages such as thank-you pages or internal search results, and leave everything else on the default.
    • Open Graph: sets the title, description and image shown when your page is shared on Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp and similar apps. A 1200 × 630 pixel image works well.
    • Twitter / X Card: controls the preview on X. The summary_large_image card shows a large picture above your title.

Why there is no meta keywords tag

Google has said it does not use the keywords meta tag for ranking, so this generator leaves it out. Your time is better spent on the title, the description and the content of the page.

How to add the tags to your website

    • Plain HTML: paste the generated code inside the <head> of the page.
    • WordPress: enter the title and description in your SEO plugin (such as Yoast or Rank Math). Use this tool to draft and check them first.
    • ASP.NET Core MVC: set the title and description per page in each view and render them once from your shared layout, instead of repeating the same tags everywhere.

After publishing, you can ask Google to re-crawl the page in Search Console. It can take days or weeks for a new snippet to appear.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the ideal length for a meta title?

Aim for roughly 50–60 characters. Google truncates titles by pixel width (around 600 pixels on desktop), not by character count, so this tool measures both. Wide letters such as W and M use more space than narrow ones.

How long should a meta description be?

Keep it between about 120 and 160 characters so it is unlikely to be cut off. Google sometimes rewrites the description to match a searcher's query, so treat your version as a strong suggestion rather than a guarantee.

Does Google use the meta keywords tag?

No. Google has said it does not use the meta keywords tag for ranking, which is why this generator does not include it. Spend that time on a clear title, a useful description and good page content instead.

    Do meta descriptions affect rankings?

Not directly. A well-written description can still help by making your result more appealing, which may improve the number of people who click it.

Where do I paste the generated tags?

Inside the <head> section of your page. On WordPress, enter the title and description in your SEO plugin (such as Yoast or Rank Math). In an ASP.NET Core MVC site, set them per page in the view and render them from your shared layout.

Is my data sent to your server?

No. The tool runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. What you type is not uploaded or stored by us.
