    What schema markup is

Schema markup is a standard vocabulary, maintained at schema.org, for describing what is on a page in a way machines can read. You add it as a small block of JSON-LD code. A search engine then knows that a page is a local business with a phone number and opening hours, or an article with an author and a publish date, instead of having to guess from the text.

    Which type should you use?

    • Organization: your homepage or About page. It names your company, logo, website and official social profiles.
    • Local Business: if customers visit you or you serve a local area. It adds your address, phone number and opening hours.
    • Article: blog posts and news. It states the headline, author, publisher and dates.
    • Product: a page that sells or presents a specific product, with price and availability.
    • FAQ Page: a page that lists questions with their answers.
    • Breadcrumbs: show where a page sits in your site structure.

Rules that keep your markup safe

    • Only describe what visitors can actually see on the page. Marking up hidden or misleading content can lead to a manual action from Google.
    • Do not invent reviews or star ratings. This generator leaves review markup out on purpose.
    • Use full URLs that start with https:// and dates in the YYYY-MM-DD format.
    • Keep the markup in sync with the page. If the price or phone number changes, update the code too.

    Does it help SEO?

Structured data is not a direct ranking factor, so adding it will not push a page up by itself. What it does is help search engines understand the page correctly and, for some types, make it eligible for rich results such as breadcrumbs in the snippet or product details. Treat it as a way to remove ambiguity, alongside good content and a clear site structure.

How to add the code to your site

    • Plain HTML: paste the script block into the page, in the head or the body.
    • WordPress: use your SEO plugin if it supports custom schema, or a plugin that inserts code in the header of a single page.
    • ASP.NET Core MVC: add the script to the view of that page, or define a section in your layout so each view can supply its own JSON-LD.

After publishing, run the page through the Rich Results Test. Fix any errors it reports, then watch the enhancement reports in Google Search Console over the following weeks.

    Frequently asked questions

    What is schema markup?

Schema markup is structured data added to a page, usually as JSON-LD, that tells search engines exactly what the page is about, for example a business, an article or a product. It helps them understand your content and can make a page eligible for enhanced results in search.

    Does schema markup improve rankings?

Google does not treat structured data as a direct ranking factor. It helps search engines understand your page and can make it eligible for rich results, but it does not guarantee either.

    Why JSON-LD instead of Microdata?

Google recommends JSON-LD. It sits in a separate script block instead of being mixed into your HTML, which makes it easier to add, edit and test.

Where do I paste the code?

Paste the script block into the page it describes, in the <head> or the <body>. On WordPress you can use an SEO plugin or a header and footer plugin. In an ASP.NET Core MVC site, add it to the view for that page.

Will I get FAQ rich results?

Since 2023 Google shows FAQ rich results only for well-known government and health websites, so most sites will not see them. The markup is still valid and can still help systems understand the page, but do not expect a visual change in search.

How do I test my markup?

Use Google's Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator linked on this page. Fix any errors, publish the page, and then check the enhancement reports in Google Search Console.

Is my data sent to your server?

No. The generator runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. What you type is not uploaded or stored by us.

Want structured data set up across your whole site?

We can add and test the right schema on every important page as part of a full SEO review.
