Free Background Remover & Changer

Drop a photo and the AI finds the main subject and removes the background in seconds. Keep it transparent, or swap in a solid colour, a blurred copy of the photo or your own picture. Everything runs in your browser, so your photo is never uploaded.

How the background remover works

A small AI model runs directly in your browser. It looks at the whole photo, works out which part is the main subject, and produces a mask that separates it from the background. The tool then sharpens the mask edge using the original photo as a guide, so hair and outlines follow the real picture instead of a blurry blob. Because everything happens on your device, your photo is never uploaded.

Fix mistakes with Erase and Restore

No automatic tool is perfect, so the Touch up panel lets you correct the result by hand. Switch on Erase and paint over any leftover background. Switch on Restore and paint over any part of the subject that was cut away by mistake. Use a small, soft brush near the edges and a larger one in the middle. Undo and Redo let you step back, and Clear touch-ups returns to the original AI result.

Tips for a clean cut-out

  • Start with a photo where the subject is clearly visible and well lit.
  • The more the background differs in colour from the subject, the cleaner the edge.
  • If the cut looks too tight or too loose, move the Edge position slider.
  • For products on a plain white or coloured backdrop, tick the plain backdrop option. It is faster and often cleaner than AI.
  • Switch between Background removed and Original to check what changed.

Choosing a new background

  • Removed (transparent): best for logos, product images and designs you will place on other backgrounds. Download as PNG or WebP.
  • Colour or gradient: a clean white background suits marketplaces and catalogues, and a brand colour suits profile pictures and team pages.
  • Blur: keeps the original scene but softens it so the subject stands out.
  • Photo: place your subject on any image, for example an office or a studio backdrop.

After you download

Large images slow a website down, so run the final image through our Image to WebP Converter to make it smaller before you upload it. For team photos, product pictures and social posts that need a consistent look, our designers can edit a whole set for you.

Limits to know about

Fine hair, fur, glass, smoke and thin objects against a busy background are hard for any automatic tool, and a lightweight model running in a browser will not match a large server-side model on those. Photos where the subject is partly hidden behind something are also difficult. Use the touch-up brush to finish the job, and always check the edges before you use the result.

Frequently asked questions

How does the background remover work?

An AI model runs inside your browser and finds the main subject of the photo. The tool then smooths the edge using the original picture as a guide, and lets you replace the background with transparency, a colour, a blurred copy of the photo or your own picture.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. Your photo is processed on your own device. The AI model file (about 5 MB) and the engine that runs it are downloaded from our site the first time you use the tool and are then kept by your browser, but your picture is never sent to a server.

Why is the first run slower?

The first time, your browser downloads the model and the engine, which together are roughly 16 MB. After that they are cached, so the next photos start much faster.

Which photos give the best result?

Photos with a clear main subject, good lighting and a background that differs from the subject. People, pets and products work best. Fine hair, fur, glass and thin objects against a busy background are harder, so adjust the edge sliders and check the result with the comparison slider.

What if my photo has a plain white or coloured backdrop?

Switch to Solid backdrop mode. It removes a plain background by colour, which is very fast and often cleaner than AI for product shots on white.

Which format keeps the transparent background?

Use PNG or WebP. JPEG does not support transparency, so a JPEG download gets a solid background instead.

What size is the result?

By default the longest side is up to 1600 pixels, which suits websites and social media. You can choose a larger size, but very large photos need more memory, especially on phones.

Can I use the result commercially?

The result is your own image, so yes, as long as you have the rights to the original photo.
